Sorry for the bad experience. It happens all the time. They even break into your car and get them.

There are ways of surviving such loses:

1. Insurance

2. Cloud backup of important data

And these days I know you can wipe your MacBook Pro/Air remotely if you took security into consideration during setup.

I think that way, you don't end up worrying about losing such items.
