@Chege, I am not mkali per se. I just wanted you to broaden your mind, otherwise you expect guys to reproduce google content:-)

You should sit down and dedicate some time to research on the subject matter, then come up with a list of them - from amongst which you intend to choose, based on the features you'd like, and MOST importantly your understanding of the same. What guys have tried....and are proud of does not matter because they will not be running yours for you. The best way to learn is DIY then consult with guys on the shortcomings you face for possible assistance.

From where I sit, there is nothing like open source "mailserver" - it's a new vocabulary you created, which is not even in any dictionary. A mail "server" consists of several components glued together to, basically, _handle_ mail - and you need to understand what that "handling" equates to:). It can be broadly categorized into SMTP, POP3 and IMAP protocols - which is where you need to start, then build upon your knowledge to choose the engines you can use.
