Please note that you don't have to be an ISP etc to become a registrar. What you need are at least two authoritative nameservers, knowledge in DNS management, a registered entity and local presence.

We're already working on an online payments system that will incorporate local mobile payments solutions, among other solutions.

3. / The cost is not much 2320 VAT inc but when you pass via proxies - The figures are inflated, that can hinder someone from registering .ke domains. I have One domain .ke and the least offer i got from ISPs was 4,000 PLus - Crazy Figures!

As I mentioned in a previous email, we held a registrar forum sometime last year where those present agreed that all registrars should charge a flat rate for dot KE domains. You shouldn't be paying over Kshs. 2,320.00 for any dot KE domain name unless that's the cost of a bundled up package.
 

I strongly support the KENIC initiative!

Please note that the rates for dot KE domain names are as follows:

CO.KE, OR.KE, NE.KE: Kshs. 2,000.00 plus VAT
AC.KE, SC.KE, GO.KE: Kshs. 500.00 plus VAT

Further, the stakeholders forum held after the 2008 AGM also agreed to have a recommended retails price (RRP) for dot KE domains. It was agreed that the KENIC rates would be the RRP.
