So what gives you the right to determine i what am saying is personal opinion or fact. As a matter of fact it is both because I am involved in two projects al mention below. so being personally involved gives me the right to form an opinion that is personal and shared among my peers and is therefore FACT. Secondly if you dont believe software versions are pre-determined look at these two links of what am involved in. (both are open source) http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:2.5/Source/Development/Roadmap firstly version 2.5x has been out since November 2009. All this time until yesterday version 2.4 has been the official version. If you want fact go to this wikipedia article and see how many days 2.5 has been marked as stable release http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blender_(software) Even though publicly 2.5 is marked as stable, I can assure you as an insider it is not stable, 2.6 is the stable release. This is just a publicity stunt. Apache also also maintains two 1.3.x and 2.0.x and 2.2.x versions of their server. Why? coz of architecture. http://sites.google.com/site/makehumandocs/road-map Now here is another roadmap which has even got the dates marked out of several alphas and Betas the stable release at the bottom though no date is marked will only be out for about 3 week. The version that follows it (marked for release in 2014) is already being worked on today yet version 1.0.0 is not yet out. this is common to have several versions being worked on simultaneously. So when version 1.0.0 comes out and followed with another a few weeks later you might think it was don hurriedly but that not the case. other open source example with several versions is Mysql, MariaDB, Php... the list is endless My arguement here is how do you know msft was not working on IE9 and IE10 simultaneously. The answer is you dont know and the other point is that is happens with large corporations with roadmaps that span up to even 10 years. Msft and other big companies dont just wake up and release software. they have plans laid out years in advance Now look at Apple why do they have a new version of iPad planned for every year, or a new iPhone. The iPad 2 deliberately lacks features because they are reserved for later released. so when you ask a question like how come iPad one was released without WiFI in this day and age... its because their roadmap said it. The roadmap is what must be followed to maintain the hype. I hope you get where I am going with this or do you still want to question my opinions? --------------------------------------- Steve Obbayi: Software Developer Homepage: http://www.sobbayi.com ======================================= ----- "Okechukwu" <okechukwu@gmail.com> wrote:
@Steve - alot of what you said is personal opinion, not FACTS. We could all go on with our personal opinions on anything, but what remains is that releasing a software for 1 month is not good for you and the user.

@Frankline you dont seem to get the point. Versions 6-8 are basically based on one architecture, 9 is different. Read my mail. this is not unique to msft. Being a new architecture its common with software vendors to earmark an entire series as unstable and I gave an example with blender. The 2.5 series is earmark as a test series since as of 2.50 the architecture was rebuilt from scratch. 2.6 has been earmarked as stable. I cant say this is the case with IE9 but its possible all IE9 versions could be marked as unstable (it doesnt matter whether its Alpha Beta Gamma or RC.)
But even msft's move to support opensource is riddled with insincerity.
A statement like that, have you done your research or are you reading the same media articles that get kickbacks from Apple and Google? I can tell you msft of late has cleaned up shop so live with it. If you have a problem with IE9 dont use it, no one is forcing you. Personally I have never used it and that hasnt made me loose sleep at all.
Again you dint read what I said... HISTORICALLY APPLE HAS BEEN JUST AS ANTI OPEN SOURCE AS MSFT. I dont even need to mention Oracle and Adobe. Now if you get your news from certain source especially CNN (mostly US edition) you will realize CNN only promotes Apple products -- FACT. With CNN backing you it creates a false hype around products. Take for instance the iPad, there is so much it lacks yet nobody focuses on that and you get this bias impression that its perfect, that the same thing with the iPhone. DId you know iPhone has had zero growth this year as far as market share goes. CNN has said nothing significant about it. The iPod was not an original idea as well. Msft Kinect has been out for a few months, It a damn serious product (needs some performance enhancements though) like no other in the gaming industry. Yet media has shunned it jus coz its a msft product. In the Gaming, Graphics programming industry theres so much hype around it, sales are phenominal, but coz its msft media is quiet about it.
reading stuff blindly off the Internet can get you lost to reality so check your sources and again if you dont understand how software versioning works, please ask

So between 6, 7, 8 Redmond decided 9 would live for 2 months? therefore 10 should live like 1 month? Nobody bashes google and apple coz they never interfered with open source. Infact, google is a developer darling because they work with open source not against so are the rest. But even msft's move to support opensource is riddled with insincerity.

That is the exact rationale am questioning when the whole would out
there basically follows a near uniform versioning system. It was not that I am ignorant of M$ ways of doing, of which your answer is based on.

Well there are many software versioning conventions and each developer can use what makes sense to the team internally. eg a version like 0.2.3 may implicitly mean that software is in Beta because of the zero. Others may release an entire series as Beta or RC. Eg Blender 2.5 series ranges from Alpha, to Beta RC2. The last stable version was 2.4x and the next is 2.6. In this case because 2.5 as written from scratch, the entire series was ear marked to be unstable.
IE9 was also almost rewrite (i think) they probably dedicated IE9 as a test series culminating in a stable IE10. Msft has experdited their products eg Windows 8 has already been given to OEM partners for drivers testing, Win mobile 8 is almost out yet Win mobile 7 has barely taken off.
Here is a link on Msft version convention for IE

And whats with releasing IE10 beta when IE9 is still in its infancy? I thought people release like IE9.1beta as development, ama these big numbers don't mean nothing to M$
