@ Bwana Lawi

i have learnt that product descriptions attract attention. Gadgets, softwares, websites etc. Then topical issues and opportunity they present like ICT and vision 2030.  project reviews like when I did one on the success of iHub. Finally Techpreneur story.

The program can be structure in 4 sections.

1. Topical issue
2. Project review
3. Techpreneur
4. Product review.

Martin

@Martin Chege, what branches of Tech do you think the should focus on, from your experience?

I have a feeling if we start talking DBs many viewers will be looking forward to the commercials.

Reason I am asking this is so that we can categorise our topics, and get the right experts so to say.
This will help in getting sponsorships since we can contact the firms that deal in the topic being discussed beforehand and have them prepare something for the show.

The show would most likely meet the following requirements:

- Instructional:
Provide instructions to complete a certain task. The task should be easily identifiable with with majority of users. (No need to tell how to set up iptables).

- Explanatory:
This is where the show shall seek to explain concepts and phenomena. Again, the content should be captivating and one that is familiar. The level of detail shall also need to be considered.

- Experimental (for lack of a better word)
This is where we come up with techie scenarios that require interrogation and research. (There was a thread about Kenyan mythbusters show. This is where it would feature). The topics/items to be interrogated and should not be things we can google. This would be one of my best features of the show

- Inspirational:
Some part of the show should be dedicated to industry members to be interviewed. Just the normal stuff, you know, how long have you been in IT, what made you choose this line, challenges, what would you advise someone aspiring to get into IT, the works

- Informational:
This section is for announcing tech news. The news should really be new and interesting. Again, as much as possible, keep it local and avoid copy paste from techcrunch.

- Challenging:
The show can sponsor (in ideas, not necessarily cash) techie challenges to the education institutions. Rules of entry and participation, evaluation, etc shall be decided by skunks.

- Discovery:
The show should be able to create/discover new (and upcoming) trends, etc in the tech industry that require attention. The target could be students - new programming languages, companies - new areas to invest in IT, new IT courses being offered. The reviews should be incisive enough to generate positive action from audience.

- Bring change that can be seen and felt
If this is going to be a skunk show, it should go past the screens and living rooms. This could be the chance to get Skunkworks known.

A problem I have with the media is when they report something very interesting and after that there is no followup. I would really like a show that takes us back to review progress of something that was brought to our attention some time in the past.

Challenges:

 - Ownership:
Who owns the show? Skunkworks is too amorphous right now to effectively manage such. Its not really a structured legal entity. (Better deal is to create the show and own it, screw skunks. Sucks but c'est la vie)

- Financials:
How to make cash and after making the cash, how to spend it. This will depend on the point above

- Content:

- Presentation

etc for now

@Calvin, why don't you do the PM work? All you need to have is the interest to do it. However, if we all sit on our posteriors waiting for someone else to start, call a meeting, setup a committee, or setup a mailing list, well, nothing will get done.

You could probably start by having a conversation with @Martin Chege to familiarize yourself with what is required. I am sure if you contacted Larry Madowo, he might have some insights. You might also want to contact everyone who has commented positively on this idea, maybe asking them what they are willing to provide...

Bottom line, do something!

We currently do not have any mailing list.
the last time we asked for volunteer PM and we couldn't get any.

The first step we could take is have a committee or a group of guys who would be handling various tasks to realize our goal

e.g somebody in charge of content, publicity/marketing, organizing the show etc

            Habari Peoples of Skunkworks!

Sometime back I was privileged to be taken on a tour of
the Pan African Group digital transmission site at Limuru
and there were quite some attention-grabbing discoveries
which I hope in a way can be handy as we set up this tech
            show/Channel.

The group provides a platform for any licensed broadcaster
out there who wants to reach any specific audience in
Kenya. Whereas the viewers would gain from clear pictures
the local broadcaster will benefit from reduction of
operating costs since they would not need to heavily
finance the distribution of their content as the case is
for analogue transmissions thus leaving more time and
resources to concentrate on the content.

This means that we can have a techies TV channel with the
only requirement being a licence from CCK citing we are a
broadcaster. All the Pan African Group would need from us
would be the copy of the licence and what we intend to air
even in soft copy plus the chums of course. If we want the
channel to be only viewed in Nairobi then they can do that
for us and that also applies to any other location. Na pia

For a show to have marketable appeal to the major media
            houses, it
            needs
to have a large enough potential marketable audience.

And therein lies the catch 22.

For a techie show to have a large audience for make
            financial
            sense to
            the
media houses, it needs to be dumbed down. The moment you
            dumb
            it
            down,
            then
it looses its appeal to most geeks since they will consider
            it,
            well,
            to be
polite, a waste of time watching.

For example, there is that techísh column in the Nation,
            written
            by a
            dude
called Sam, I think. I would most certainly postulate that
            he
            is
            forced to
            simplify it.

Larry Madowo used to have a very nice techie show, where he
            was
            not at
liberty to dumb it down, and it was great! But, it was
            positioned
            at
            around
mid day, who watches tv at that time really?

Unless of course, media houses are not the distribution
            medium, in
            which
case the aforementioned catch 22 does not exist.
