That's an excellent example of a useless patent, and the reason software patents are "a bad thing". The method described is a very common biometric authentication method, I wonder if it was awarded (I hope not).
I'd like to see patents for *real* inventions, perhaps a way to improve image-recognition algorithms so they can work well under very adverse conditions (like in a rainstorm, for example). Or a way to intelligently route traffic in a place like Nairobi, where traffic behaves more like a swarm.
But I suppose the whole idea of patents isn't to invent any more, but rather principally to make money by gaming the loophole-infested system.
