tell em John ... unfortunately the options available to technopreneurs by the sheer tyranny of numbers direct us to trying to stand on the shoulders of the biggest giant in the field... now since you raised up patents and copyrights .... how do we do the do in kenya> 1. What is the process for software developments 2. Do they hold water 3. Is there any recourse on stolen ideas... On Wed, Aug 28, 2013 at 6:19 PM, Joram Mwinamo <joram.mwinamo@gmail.com>wrote:
Never , ever create a product or service that is solely dependent on one platform, where you are not the platform owner and the platform owner has no obligation, other than that of their good heart, to keep your product running on their platform, while they have enough money to hire ten times more people than your team, who are ten times smarter, to come up with a product similar to yours thats ten times better and make ten times more money than you. The technology you come up with has to be so good that you can patent it and if they copy, you can sue them for ten times more money than you hoped to make in your life.

I think the notion that the idea is what translates to success is not very smart. Making usable stuff that helps peoples lives does. its the only reason linux on the desktop has not become ubiquitous. Its rather difficult o setup and use if you are not a techie. same with any other ideas that come along. Microsoft had revenue from the word go with windows. Safaricom had revenue with their first call. the margins are another matter all together.

there is never a unique idea, the question is whats your approach and are you a first mover to enjoy monopoly for the time being before the market floods. If it does floods can you innovate to make business sense and look different from the floods.
Any idea can be stolen but that does not mean that people will not invest.. Just make it tight and keep the trade secrets safe... There will always be something the copycats will miss. always! I think one should act fast, improve on the products , research well and have different scenarios to counter the external forces.
Sometimes our ideas get stolen because we present them raw' there is never anything tangible and for the reason the copiers will fry it on a pan.

If the idea can be so easily stolen, the VC or PE firm will not invest in it. The question actually should be, if the idea or business can be replicated easily, why would they invest in it?
