Googlegroups will work great with any non-google email accounts so long as you stick to the mailing functions.

At some point, you may get the natural bias to use the other services in the google eco-system such as Googledrive and Googleshare.Take note that any document shared to the group account via such WILL NOT be accessible to non-google-email accounts.
