The HDD itself may be OK, maybe the problem is the hardware that makes
up the casing, power connection and SATA/USB circuitry. I'd buy a
cheap EXT HDD case...or dismantle someone else's - and connect the HDD
to it. Or connect it to any SATA connector, maybe inside a desktop PC.
