Recompile? Am mortified. There surely has to be someone who has been through it before :( . Plus am not one who is very familiar with all the network acronyms so I might recompile my drivers or kernel and end up right where I started : good signal, good password but no authentication.

Eeeeh, perhaps you should move away from it. You could be experiencing
the reverse of the doppler effect [
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler_effect ], only that now this is
not sound :D
I really suspect the kernel and the wifi modules installed. In the
worst case, why not find the exact specs of your hardware, roll up
your sleeves and recompile the whole thing from the sources? It is
easier done than said ........
