I think they are not using googlegroups now.
They have registered a domain name and hosted it on a server where Mailman is being used so addresses from googlegroups have been imported into Mailman.
If you ask me, in the absence of forced subscription, and if they allow users to unsubscribe themselves, the way it is implemented now is quite acceptable. It's the way mailing lists are supposed to be.
So let's not show animosity towards them unless we can find justification for it.
