Google apps wont do it for me as I already have an under-utilised server and I'm kinda used to doing my own administration.

@ Mr. X and Mr. Y, Evolution, Thunderbird are mail clients just like Outlook, definitely I wasn't looking for those but thanks for the contribution anyway.

why don't you try postfix and install squirrelmail. It's easy, light,
scalable n there's a lot of documentation available online. If you
install webmin, managing the setup becomes a walk in the park. The
