I used to do several voip to pstn systems
a while back; simply when you dial 888 xxxxxxx the switch recognizes the 888
and sends the call to a Voice to VOIP converter, usually a cisco or other
device. This voip call is then forwarded to several providers such as http://www.ibasis.com/
These ibasis like companies collect
traffic from several providers and wholesale it to other providers who are
connected telephone networks, who then convert that call back into analogue
voice, which then lands on the destination telephone.
Difference between this and “normal”
international calls is that the ordinary calls are switched using telco to
telco, eg safaricom to telkom to Uganda telecom to zambia telecom to bt cellnet
to etc etc till the end of the line and not via the internet

Subject: [Skunkworks] VoIP Calls
via 888 short code
Hello skunks,
One can make VoIP calls via Safaricom and Orange/TLK but dialing
888-CC-AC-NUMBER. I have tested this with Orange/TKL and the quality is really
good (or was I lucky?). I am wondering how they implement this service. Who is
their upstream provider, if any?
