Well, I don't really know how to use this thing but I'll give it a go.

First, of course I'll take a huge leap and say I took on the Nelly Data project, Zink Digital did the design and all but it needed to do live streaming and that's where I came in, with very little web knowledge (thank the universe for Google)

SO

1. Nelly Data is a local app, I think it was named after a lady called Nelly who I worked with once (very mean lady), not on Nelly data though)... I worked for Knowing at the time they were rolling it out and enhanced the Nelly Data interface that's now password protected (I wonder if those leaked, hmmm...) and I designed and developed several "TV"s like the one seen in the Dyer & Blair reception, it's a scroll-up ticker. Also the ticker on bdafrica.com, stocks kenya, and most broker websites working with Knowing limited. Good old days.

2. Nelly data are a certified vendor of NSE data. That means that whatever they give has been checked by NSE (dudes) and is accurate.

3. The main Nelly Data dashboard runs on ASP (native) and AJAX. The rest-crazy logic that if said would be termed as leaking trade secrets, and I'm not in the habit of attracting bad karma. The stocks that were previously shown on the wap.safaricom.com homepage were before they (Safaricom) changed the interface was also Nelly Data.

4. Knowing Limited do everything to do with Shares & IT. Crazy (as in insanely bright) guy at the top who doesn't even allow himself to be called CEO. Master of all things professional. Sells ice to eskimos, that man. And that's his strategy, he doesn't want/need to be known to rake in the business the company realizes (and it's not small). They also do Custodian systems for all this banks who are now brokers (wonder if that will land me into trouble, hope not)....

5. It's NOT as easy as just pulling a spreadsheet and pushing the data to a DB... Think about data that refreshes every 15 seconds. Calculate the number of spreadsheets that in that case, will be issued from 9am - 3pm. Data is provided in other ways (TCP/IP). Like the fix protocol Edwin talked about

6. @Saidi - The tickers are free for public viewing, and you're one of the gifted few who can take advantage of this... security isn't exactly zero because you can't stop the ticker's functionality or get any more than you're actually seeing e.g. like data for the previous 5 minutes if you haven't been there to save it already. But that is a good point, and knowing Knowing's owner, he probably already has terms-of-use and all relevant documents on the way.

7. Finally, there are lots of other guys who vend form NSE, Rich, Eight, MyStocks, but their sites are either too slow or give very old data, minimum 15 minute lag. Nelly Data is on the spot data. Visit your broker, you'll be amazed at what Nelly Data offers, I can comfortably say we matched Google Finance, while I was working there anyway, and that was 2007. If anyone can take stocks to the next level, Nelly Data can. All the other people are too involved in being noticed and attracting fame (cough cough... Rich.co.ke... cough cough)

If you want it, holla.... with a few conditions:

- Help me write a script that will extract the .xls data into CSV files (Apache Tika http://lucene.apache.org/tika/ is an excellent library for this, but anything else is welcome)
- Let's put up the raw data, extracted data and extraction scripts somewhere so anyone can access it

I once wrote a program that was converting the excel spreadsheet data into a database (sql server), will look for it in my archives and share..
