Well said Phares. The things you guys are saying are all true, but just like google the search engine was, android the OS is a revolution happening right before us, think of it as a soon to be way of life. In a the near future it will have evolved into things other than just a mobile devices OS... On Fri, Apr 22, 2011 at 2:12 PM, Mark Mwangi <mwangy@gmail.com> wrote:
I think the comparison is moot. different markets. different expectations. Different swag. iPhone is for guys who want to buy once and forget. its an investment. apple devices last longer than any other brand because they are premium products built with premium materials. Android and their hardware are built for the masses. and thus the build quality and products are for the mass market. that there are more android users is obvious and that was the plan. whether it translates to higher profit margins for the manufacturers and google is another matter.

Comparing the two is as easy as comparing candle light and the sun light. iOS is a killer!

A few things, I'm not taking anything away from Android, it's a brilliant OS. But it's success comes partly from their strategy. I'm not sure we would have the same numbers if the iPhone was equally priced. We have 50,000+ Android device activations in Kenya, primarily because of the IDEOS (which retails at 8,500 KES). The only other IOS device available in our retail stores is the iPhone 4, at 105,000 KES (Phone Express) and roughly 80,000 KES in other stores. We are comparing Apples and Oranges.
Google's model at the end of the day is going to scale. It was designed to scale. It's not possible for Apple to take over the market, even if they had the capacity because of anti-trust rules. Really, it's good for all.
As far as Nokia is concerned, if you really think about it, their last card was in going the Microsoft way. Really the only reason people are buying the IDEOS is because it has Android OS. Android is making devices hardware vendor indepenent. One can argue the same about Microsoft, but none of the others will have the sort of mindshare that Nokia will. If you think about it: Nexus one was made by HTC, Nexus S, Samsung, IDEOS Huawei. At a time when all the aforementioned hardware vendors had jumped ship to Android, it was to some extent to Nokia's benefit, because now, everyone seems to be waiting for the first Windows Phone 7 devices from Nokia.... -- With Regards,
