Hello @Moses, :-) IMHO, *Everything that could have been done has already been done. All that is remaining to be done is what has so far not been done but will be done because someone else out there already did it.* Funny... :-))) Let me share my view and my experience. You see, this part of what is the future of creating that has dodged me from day one when I got into the interest of re-learning programming. I could have done Business Apps too easily, I could have done Web Development which I already knew from the mid-nineties as basics, I could have done much and established software development because it already exists and its all there. All I needed was to put the pieces together and get rolling, its really that simple. Remember that in a nutshell, an App is really about how to get end user data, store the data and display the data for querying. There was no need to take the step towards what the next levels would be e.g. hosted or cloud apps which will still take a long time to mature because the end user thinking process still has to change gradually. You could say am in the same boat as those pushing for e.g. cloud services. The local circuits exist, the technology to create the cloud services exist, the infrastructure and mid-sized data centres exist but where is cloud services today in terms of market share? One reason I agree with @Phares and @Wash is that I had a recent discussion with someone who I was talking about how I see the future potential of putting up local developed solutions e.g. Business Apps that run on hosted services or the local cloud. Again, keep in mind that I've tried and run online tests here as early as 2005/6 via local circuits with various product vendors. So for me it is not about the technology used to create the hosting systems or services which I find pretty boring as same as the networks and physical layers. Anyway, the discussion ended up with that the bottom line in many import countries is one = consumer, which ever way you look at it. Dubai is based on this. Within such an environment, it would be extremely difficult to innovate a new process or method. Consider this : we don''t have local created e-voting systems, manufacture our own cellphones as we are supposed to be a big market, improve on systems that can better change the development in many areas.Look at private Wifi Acess points that can be used for providing internet services to neighbours etc, no one has created a scratch card system to be used on private captive portals. The list is endless. In each part there lies innovation to change and improve. You can pick one and see what to do with it, but no one will. Part of my KPLC monitoring Web App is to be used later for keeping in check potholes where kenyans can share instant images of potholes and hopefully they get sorted. But is this really development in terms of software development and how does it work in the economical sense? I still have plenty of time/years to decide where the business aspects will come into the equation of software development, but what about those who are already doing commercial software development? Why are they not banking on the future of technologies and sparing some time to create the future? All am going to write is this. The future is on the Application layer and what can be done here will change countries forever. Apple has proved this beyond doubt. Without the right Applications, even hardware manufacture is not possible. Some thots. :-) Rgds. On Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 5:52 PM, Moses Muya <mouzmuyer@gmail.com> wrote:
All,
You will all agree with me that Mpesa has made our lives so much easier.Do you remember when we you had to speak to a PSV driver and give him money to take to your relatives who lived Up-country?Now all this can be done with a few button presses, not forgetting that it is way more secure!
What do you reckon is the next frontier in Kenyan technology?Which system will revolutionalise the way we do things in Kenya?Or simply put,how would you like your life as a Kenyan to be simplified using technology? If you were to dream of an ideal system, what would it be about?
