I second kiania. . . .am also abit confused as to what will actually change. . .is it to say to get certain channels they wiil charge? or will it be like dstv only that now some will be free while others paid for?. . .in the mean time lemme go look for Dr.Gachigi n see if I can "pox" in that team
I happened to attend the launch yesterday and the content and
distribution issue come up repeatedly. Here are some highlights :-
1) There are 40 TV pending licenses awaiting processing by CCK and
over 150 Radio licenses.
2) DVB-T will allow all these stations to be licenses however I highly
doubt if the current headend (HE) can take 50 muxes and if this can be
done on one HE.
3) This project is broke in 3 phases viz Test and initial launch
(happened yesterday), Phase 2 greater Nairobi and Urban/Metro centers
and Phase 3 remaining regions needed to achieve countrywide coverage.
4) Kenya has 5 million television sets which form the potential
marketsize. There are more TV Sets than internet connections, second
only to mobile fones ...
5) Dr. Kamau Gachigi (a skunker) and a team from UON are working on a
local spec for manufacture and fabrication of Set-Top-Boxes. I am soo
proud of this team.
6) Content is King and this is broadcasting and equipment etc
7) Based on the KBC Tender the provision was for all SD Channels and
NO HD. I think premium content will also be based on SD channels at
least for the 1st phase.
I suggest we do a dedicated skunk session on Digital Terrestrial
Television (DTT) and implications where we explore all this issue. We
have to be the most informed lot and if possible but the STPs and try
it out.
These are indeed exciting times.
