Well I think its depends on your level of ability to detect holes and or impossibilities in the instruction. There are quite a number of loopholes in the scam that anyone with a sound mind will figure out.
First of all, if you are a techie guy u very well know that unless your phone is 3g enabled, it cannot receive 3g. 3g requires nothing from the service provider like sim card applications and hence no start ups are necessary.
Then, the police say you cant trace the money after it has been transferred. How is it being transferred. I believe any monitery transaction should have an accessible person to whom the account can be associated with. o its either the police are part of the scam, the bank itself or the monetary system in question is not robust enough to handle such cases which makes it not safe for use. Its a pity that we do so many such monetary infrastructures here in Kenya.

I highly recommend guys take an interest in the phenomenon of social engineering. it's not just about stealing credit cards. Sometimes its purely for the satisfaction of manipulating human behaviour -- in this case preying on the fact that given a threat the human thing to do would be to circulate it.

A quick search whenever receiving such messages will save a lot of anxiety. Not to mention bandwidth.

Is it feasible that the same stung is being pulled worldwide with the exact same wording, grammar and even phone number in question>

Rad, People just press forward till someone down the line finds the email in the Wikipedia Hoax section

Reminds me of a character in a Jeffrey Archer Novel who use to put up a Newspaper Classified telling people too send in money quickly since the deadline was near.

Funny thing is that he used to receive money.

Hie Rad,

It didn't happen to me, but it for sure did happen to somebody.

What is important is just to be cautious.

Real life experience? Has it happened to you personally? Or do you know anyone to which it has happened to?

Sounds to me like yet another hoax. Google seems to abound with the same story, word for word (even spelling mistakes and grammar)  http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=After+45+minutes+I+felt+very+suspicious+since+the+caller+did+not+even+introduce+his+name&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

Hello all,

Below please read a story on a real life experience.

Dear All,

this much is true..........

"It all started when I received a call from someone claiming that he was from Safaricom

and he asked me to shutdown my phone for 2 hours for 3g update to take place. As I was rushing for a meeting, I did not question and turned off my cell phone.

After 45 minutes I felt very suspicious since the caller did not even introduce his name. I quickly turned on my cell phone and I received several calls from my family members and the others were from the number
that had called me earlier - 3954380.

I called my parents and I was shocked that they sounded very worried asking me whether I am safe.

My parents told me that they had received a call from someone claiming that they had me with
them and asking for money to let me free. The call seemed so real and my parents were certain they heard

'My voice' crying out loud asking for help.

My father was at the bank waiting for further instructions about the money transfer.

I told my parents that I am safe and asked them to lodge a police report.

Right after that I received another call from the guy asking me to shutdown my cell phone for
another 1 hour which I refused to do and hung up. They keep calling my cell
phone. I have lodged a complaint with the police and I was
informed by the officer that there were many reports of similar scams. MOST of the cases
reported that the victim had already transferred the money!

And of course it is impossible to get back the money.

Be careful as this kind of scam could happen to any of us!!!
These guys are so professional and very convincing during calls. If you are asked to
shut down your cell phone for updates by the service provider, do not do so!
The service providers will hopefully place adverts to that effect in the media...

Be Safe and Stay Alert!

Please pass around to your family and friends!
