I am using an Android device so naturally this solution only works on Android - I will experiment on Apple iOS devices if someone tells me they have the same problem.

Known Issue(from my experience): Since you have effectively chosen to use the 3G network ONLY, your device will lose ALL connectivity,voice and data, any time you move to a place that is not covered with 3G. In such a case, simply carry out the above steps but select 'WCDMA preferred' and your device will reconnect.

I think we are expecting too much and paying too little for it. Look at the Internet charges and associated speed on most developed countries. Unless you are willing to pay more for unlimited Internet its not possible for ISPs and Telcos to offer it. Looking at the cost of setting up 3G/4G networks and the limited radio resource its just hard to sustain the kind of data rates at the current prices.
