It's simple, you can only emulate the scope of your thoughts, I think 3000 books are better than none, or the usual pair. I guess it's better to know how things work than just using them. 
This is why  "end of warranty period" has variable meaning to different people:
Non-techies : OMG what will I do if it gets spoilt
Techies : Finally I can open it up!

On the flipside.
I've lived in a country where an above average 16 year old could not do long division or long multiplication, had never seen a fuse, could not figure out where an electron goes in an Atom.... and the average citizen only knows one two countries in Africa.... South Africa and Africa, and to top it off a Bsc graduate who couldn't name the planets (in any order), had never heard of mole theory, didn't know what a neutrino is and hadn't visited (and didn't know it was there) a major tourist attraction that was 20kms away.

Phew, I'd rather know how to read music sheets than not. I'd rather know mole theory that not... By induction, I'd rather know than be ignorant.

The purpose is to impart knowledge no matter the medium. In that case then we should never use calculators and should instead use sticks stones and toes.
