
Christiano, I think you are referring to fuel consumption, measured in miles per gallon(mpg)[litres per kilometre]. That is different from the engine capacity, and they aren't directly related as such. I think I need to refer again to some notes as I am a bit rusty with this stuff but I believe 2.5l represents *the total capacity of the air+fuel mixture used by the engine* (here I mean the total number of cylinders in the piston engine) *during a single full combustion cycle* - when air is inducted into the cylinders, mixed with fuel and burnt to produce the power to drive the wheels. Forget the gory details of this unless you want to be an engine specialist.
