When I receive the funds in my paypal, I send them to a "contact" of mine in US who then withdraws the same into his bank account there, then sends the monies to me via Mpesa or Moneygram. Mpesa is usually faster since he can do it from his phone wherever he is, but it is more expensive since he is charged to send and I am charged to withdraw. Moneygram is cheaper and instant, but he has to find a Moneygram depot to send from so it is a bit slower. Withdrawing from Paypal to bank account takes about 3 days.
On average, I lose about $10 to $50 due to all those middlemen. The more I send, the more I lose. I lose even more if I am converting from one currency to another. But it is a price I have to bear.
Bottomline: It can be done but it is expensive.
