@Dave I assure you if your machine can run XP it can run Windows 7 pretty well. Especially if you switch off all the eye candy manenos like Aero themes.

I ran it happily on a 1.6 GHz, 60 GB with 512 RAM Toshiva for over a year.

In many ways it was faster than XP
