@Tony. I still have not seen or read of a hardware mod on the PS3.
However last year a break though was made and some very enterprising fellows got on it.
However, Sony took that opportunity to release a security update that countered this, but it still works if you don't update.
If you check on torrents you will find the first PS3 games uploaded were in late August.

@Wash Chipping is physically soldering extra hardware onto a consoles motherboard that alters its BIOS. In short it allows you to play pirated games  and other things e.g the old xbox can be turned into a a media center through installing XBMC xbox media center.
