I think all what we can learn from this saga is that if you lose your iDevices, your data is most likely very secure. Very few ways to access it. Starting with iOS 7, you can't even restore an iPhone or iPad to a new firmware if you don't know the current iCloud account password. This will definitely make iPhones and iPad less likely to be stolen. To restore firmware, you need to disable Find My iPhone first, which you can't if you don't know the iCloud password. One last check - have you tried draining the battery and then leaving it off for some time - I once had an issue with an iPhone, very long time ago iPhone2, and draining the battery and leaving it off for two days did work magic - Maybe, just maybe, if it doesn't help, then I personally give up.
