Now that Wash is happy about Mint, maybe you can also introduce young skunks (3+) to Qimo4kids. Its also one of the Ubuntu spin offs. /Bonz On Tue, Apr 19, 2011 at 9:59 AM, Thuo Wilson <lixton@gmail.com> wrote:
Hope am not late to comment;
During early days in 2004 i used redhat 9 - primitive, but had some very important drivers (broadlogic :)) then went to fedora 3 - 6 for support issues which was a real thing then... Centos opened my eyes and replaced fedora with it till 5.0 for desktop (from 3.x-5.0) - GREAT FOR SERVERS/ with RHEL Then Mandriva - cute desktop especially on KDE and great user interface/experience, graphics and media players
UBUNTU - my now favourite for 3 years down the line still seem to be the desktop i will be using in the far future...
*E&OE*
1, great support and forums 2, support for almost all drivers/emulations 3, mid-beautiful interface that centos/fedora BUT not anywhere close to mandrake/mandriva. 4, themes of choice, compiz etc 5, audio/video codecs at ease 6, virtualization (though others would too) 7, great tool and a necessity for techies especially in IT/engineering 8, everybody is taken care of - student, graphic designer, programmer, engineer, teacher, techie, accountant, newbies, storekeepers etc - you will find something for everyone 9, i find mounting on drives and partation easier - and anybody can do it than any other linux distro 10, samba and printing is soo easy. 11, anybody can use it so long as you can read - everything so plain and documentation so elaborate - redhat may also have this bigtime. the list goes on and on...

Prior to this entire discussion I was planning to move completely to BSD, I actually downloaded GhostBSD since its native Gnome based desktop. Wash, thank you throwing a spanner in the works.[?] Anyway I will still try it out.

John,
I still run BSD, but I have this extra laptop which I did not want to run either Windows or PC-BSD so I decided Linux would be a good deal. However, there are so many Linuxes suitable for Desktop environments that I just wasn't sure which one was the best (or rather would satisfy my Unix needs while also giving me a functional Desktop). I am happy to say MINT fitted this bill so well. Wacha kusema this debate was a waste. Imenisaidia sana. I did not even know about the existence of MINT in the first place:) I am not a happy MINT user. I don't even carry/touch my PC-BSD/Windows laptops anymore since these guys let me know about MINT.

Im throwing mine in the ring too:-) cisco IOS....well since everyone is throwing in theirs now:-) You are leaving BSD why? after converting me to it?
I am currently running ubuntu 10.10 for my tiny tiny notebook. Other than that I still insist on BSD (most of my work is still on cli).........of late i also have a test desktop running Redhat EL.
On the other hand, this debate wouldnt feel soo wasted if we were dealing with an actual noob. I know for a fact Wash can test them all and tell us why he picks the one he finally goes with.....

Okay, folks. There must be a reason why so many have voted Ubuntu though I wonder where OpenSuse stands in all this. A few years back, Ubuntu CDs were everywhere, you could even order via e-mail and get them sent to you free of charge, yet one of my Linux heros (Sammy Lusiola) could not be dissuaded from using OpenSuse. My other Linux hero (Steve Muchai) was not the helpful guy, at least not where Linux advocacy was involved, coz he lived in the CLI. From that time, I haven't given Linux a serious thought/consideration. That was 2007, IIRC. A lot has changed now and everyone is singing Ubuntu, but now it looks like Ubuntu has really evolved, much like Windows, where we have Ubuntu variants.
Now, Collins, I am the techie type, but I still don't know which Ubuntu I should go for. Can I get all those*buntu wrapped into one, much like Windows 7 Ultimate?? Which one is the Ubuntu Ultimate?
I will go Ubuntu Ultimate, or wait for Windows 10.
