How can a spike take out everything.. EVERYTHING! even though there's a surge protector on Both the UPS's i'm using?

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!  and i can't even sue them for this... Can i? all drives and equipment are insured.
