Tecno can get it right if they don't repeat what Huawei did in the advent of Android in Kenya, the ideos day. Huawei just came like John the Baptist, cleared the way, then left Samsung to reap what they have sowed. They never really followed the first Ideos with a solid offering. 

Now let's see: 

Ideos was a Google + Huawei product, something like a Nexus device. When Huawei were left to do things on their own, the Ascend Y 100 which was the followup was a total mess. Safaricom didn't seem to advise them either. 

Now come Tecno time and they were the second revolution, launched the Tecno N3, and it was a success. Tecno N3 is just another Reference Design device, like many out there (Ideos, Intel Yolo, Xolo in India to name a few). The N3 is powered by Qualcomm processor, the followup to N3 are all Mediatek, obviously a different thing altogether. It's now that we see developers looking at MediaTek powered devices to develop for as Mediatek has been in the news lately for good reasons like True Octa Core and other big names like 4G LTE before ARM licensees do. As we speak, very many people know they are stuck with the OS they bought the device with, no upgrades (I stand to be corrected).

Now if Tecno doesn't learn from this and increase their support in software, they will prepare the second coming of the next winner in the market, could be Samsung again, or that Nokia Normandy Android for the low end. I don't predict doom, India's Micromax is doing good in the market upsetting the global giants, all it takes is a deeper study in the market, to keep reinventing themselves.

All the physical engineering is done by the Foxconn guys none of it(as far as I can tell) is done in California. Just design though this is obviously the most important part.

I had an opportunity to look at the Tecno Phantom A+ at their store on Mama Ngina Street and must say am impressed by what I saw. A dual sim 5.0 1.2 mhz quad core with fantastic display ( look sismilar to my S3) all for 24k plus portabl charger and case - I think these Chinese chaps are on to something.

I would however wish to hear more from someone who has owned the phone for more than a month before jumping to conclusions but Im begginning to see a strong competitor to Samsung in the Mid Tier range downwards.

What are your thoughts ?
