IMHO it depends on the backup power supply that exists and level of control you have over it. For example, if there's a generator but its owned by the building, has no autoswitching, and no control over when its serviced or fueled - then i would go with an Inverter and loads of batteries. If i own the generator and am responsible for the fueling, servicing, etc, i would go with an online UPS. The thing to be careful about - when dealing with servers and inverters ensure that you get pure sine wave inverters. The switching delay of inverters can be a problem to servers and routers. Pure sine wave inverters should work relatively ok. HTH, Mich
