Check out GLPI, http://www.glpi-project.org/spip.php?lang=en, specifically designed for managing IT assets. Last time I checked it out, there was an open source module which you could install into client machines to harvest client data and feed it into GLPI, so you don't have to add them one by one.

And its as open source as they come, pure and sweet PHP and MySQL.
