Dear Skunks, Email from KRA themselves. I've also put their addresses so that we can all see. So here goes! Let's see if I can hold them to this. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <Catherine.Mule@kra.go.ke> Date: 4 December 2012 11:30 Subject: Re: Fw: Laptop Importation Cc: cic@kra.go.ke, Jane.Ayako@kra.go.ke, Mark.Odhiambo@kra.go.ke Good morning, If you are buying a new laptop then you will not be charged Import Duty. You will however be required to pay 5000/- IDF (Import Declaration Fee). If the laptop is used then you will have to pay 20% Excise Duty. Kind regards, Catherine M. The value is US$ 1099 plus shipping of US$ 109. What importation duty will I expect? eBay is going to send by FedEx economy shipping. Please let me know what to expect so that I can budget. Thanks! In Feb this year, I ordered for some PCi FXO ports from China. And the good man there wrote on their declaration form that they were network cards totaling to around $35. <hindsight> I think he had worked with Kenyans before as I did not tell him how to avoid taxes </hindsight> Essentially I only paid the invoice price + shipping, no IDF, no TAX The supplier I have identified has put up an addendum to his ordering page essentially asking, if there is a way that I can avoid tax I include the request upon confirmation of payment. Being the good citizen that I think I am, I am wondering whether the same will apply, as the prior order was computer parts and this order is a tablet which can be regarded as a computer or a phone depending at the individual at customs. Anyway will take the plunge and let you guys know what happens. Thanks for all the advice.

25% import duty + 16% VAT
eg. if valued at 10 000 kshs, you will be be asked to pay: 2500 kshs for import duty + 16% of (10,000 + 2,500 kshs) = 2,500 + 2,000 kshs = 4,500 ksh

This is good. I'd like to hear from someone who has actually done it. I've realized from this thread that it depends on your negotiation skills :) any input from someone who has brought in a laptop from ebay? and better still is there someone who can do it for me and give me expected costs?

If you use a company like DHL, are there any taxes like the ones Posta levies?
Absolutely. DHL normally work closely with a KRA clearing agent to ensure that all taxes/dutie/levies due are paid. I frequently use DHL.
