@Susan, you need to adopt a methodical approach to solving your puzzle. First, find out why or what is making your site slow, and for that, I highly recommend PageSpeed or YSlow. Firefox's Webdeveloper Toolbar will give you those two, plus the "Net" tab, which tells you the size and time taken to load each and every asset on your site.
From there, start by fixing the items with the biggest possible impact, most likely those images you are using for the slideshow...
