I think the prices for Synology equipment are quite prohibitive. Given that RAID is RAID everywhere, HDD is HDD everywhere, SATA is SATA everywhere, Ethernet is Ethernet, then the only difference between these NASes remain the WebUI for management and perhaps the cooling system. USB interface is not an important feature as few will end up using it. Given this (perhaps skewed) reasoning, I fail to understand why Synology products are quite expensive - comparatively. Could you kindly pitch for your products - with emphasis on the costs? On Mon, Oct 22, 2012 at 8:49 AM, Josy Ngatia <josyveros@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi,
I bought a friend an iomega 4TB at SharafDG. After a few hours of shopping I realized IOMega was the then best avaliable product.I did not like the Western Digital devices I found there as they did not have RJ45 interface making them hard to interconnect via a normal switch.

Get a friend going to Dubai to bring you one - it perfectly fits in a laptop bag.

Frank

They (Coast Data) were not able to tell me that precisely. I spoke to a Sales lady who said she's not sure about the disks being included so you can safely assume NO DISKS, until you get there.

Wash,
Does the cost you mentioned include the disks inside or only the enclosure?

Are you going to be doing manual backups? Sorry, but this is another indulging one! Then my suggestion is that you consider THREE things:
1. Disk redundancy - if you have a single 2TB disk without RAID, you are sitting on a time-bomb. So it's better to have 2x2TB HDD in a RAID 1 (Mirror). Slow, but hopefully both disks wouldn't die on you at the same time! You could get a NAS with a capacity of 4 disks and do a RAID 5 or RAID10... it's upto you to decide on what RAID level you want, but RAID1 is the most basic and you shouldn't do without at least RAID1. 2. Space required - This equals the equivalent of the sum of the sizes of all the disks you are going to backup (at the extreme, assuming that you are going to create disk images. You can do the sizing yourself. 3. Network connectivity - it would be great if your NAS has a Gigabit interface to the LAN, and you have a Gigabit switch. Most computers these days have gigabit Ethernet anyway.
Your budget will determine the device you go for. I know of at least one D-Link device that has Gigabit LAN and takes 4 HDD.
Here are some details: http://sharecenter.dlink.com/products/DNS-343
Coast Data have it in stock at KES 34,950+VAT but they normally don't sell to end-users so you need to be smart:-)
