Firstly, as per your description and charges, it seems that the guy is no hardware hacker nor low level programming specialist because it would take ages to master any encryption system especially based on a chipset. Can you imagine prodding a processor bus timing bursts? With what? Who has such equipment here? The workings of such an encryption systems are not public knowledge so you have to sketch out your analysis and understand the buses/timings. You have to be very very very good, maybe too good in your skillset. Just a simple question : Do you know who uses 20-50Ghz Oscilloscopes in KE? Even if you take the code approach, you still to be very good with PIDS to request data and have chipset info to do this. To me, seems he is an RF guy who knows how DSTV operates in many areas such as commercial ones. The only explanation I can think of is that he may have inherited some equipment from a hotel/apartment and thus the whole thing could be a pretty twisted affair due to smart card account info manipulation. I'd stay away from such.
