I believe the intention was to educate and empower the end user.

They've been several customer complaints on users who intentionally or otherwise subscribe to services but lack awareness on how to unsubscribe from premium rate services.

Dear Listers,

I noticed that Bulk SMS messages sent to Safaricom network now carry the suffix STOP20465 at the end of the message.

On further enquiry, I was informed that any SMS will have a limit of 140 characters instead of the usual 160 characters due to the suffix text.

Anyone from Safaricom to share the rationale behind this?

Best regards,
