Gideon, I would suggest that you seek training first and foremost. Let the money come later. Get all your skill sets on some real stuff, real comps, real users, mess up a few times. But as soon as you've got your act together, and you should if you were meant for IT, then you can go out and make demands for your services as you were advised.

You need to show an employer why the should have you in the their IT department rather than some soulless technician working in some outsourcing company somewhere maybe even in India or Kazakhstan or even Timbuktu. The reason why companies and employers have IT departments is for these kind of skill, not the technical ones, but I am not saying technical skills are invalid but they are just part of the package. And they are willing to pay a premium for them. Otherwise they could just Google or Bing.
