Unfortunately, http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2008/09/what-was-stack-overflow-built-with/, stackoverflow is not opensource. However, their tag system is a very good way of getting to topics.

The tandaa configuration is very good. That could be a good way to go if it could have the following:
1. Information is not paginated. Any info out of the first page must be searched. If info was paginated, you can e.g move through all the 'july info' through pages.
2. Alternatively/additionally, add tags to enable information search via topic. The info can then be paginated under that tag.

I'm sure all these can be added on Wordpress, making this a very good system. We can bubble up the more useful info via tag-clouds. If this is not possible in wordpress, we can use drupal. Drupal has all the tagging and pagination features with its basic install.

Since the website is already running with both mailing system and forum, I assume that both can run on the server without overloading traffic/bandwidth, e.t.c. So, wordpress or drupal's mailing lists can be added via modules. This will be better than the current setup of separate mailing list and website.

After this, we advise people to move to the website or we migrate people's accounts manually to the website and shut down the mailing list system (the website will be handling mailing lists). So when people move to the website they will still get mail as usual. From then onwards, it won't matter whether someone is getting info via mail or accessing the website.

Many are times when you follow something because it appeared on your email and probably one of the main reasons why skunkworks has been very successful is that sense of belonging. The fact that you feel you are part of the going concerns and you contribution matters however "skunty" your info could be.

It is an psychological factor that builds over time, my suggestion would be we maintain the mailing list with a connection to the blogs/forums. We get summaries of threads and if one wants to contribute, you login to the facility and give your thought process. The knowledge is passed on and one can get access to it in the future through search engines. More so get the exiting email alerts that keep us on our toes on whats happening.

This will allow for a seamless and a more planned transition. I also feel for guys who are looking for solutions and stuff will also have a chance on a short term basis. they don't have to start a fora to source for an item. All these factors if well thought we can create a very powerful resource that will be of benefit to all members.

  1. It is a forum
  2. It is also a wiki - you can edit each other's posts (within reason of course)
  3. Frequent contributors are rewarded
  4. Jokers are penalized
  5. You can tag posts
  6. You can offer bounties for questions to be answered faster
  7. You can comment on forum replies, in addition to replying directly
  8. Quality posts float to the top, nonsense sinks to the bottom
  9. Administrative rights are earned

A mix of presentable colour schemes would work well. Not too colourful or too dull ( I'm not good when it comes to mixing colours)

Alternatively, if we were to have skunk's colour, white and black are its identity.
