First, you should not cross-post! Having said that, your position now is that you already have a box running Asterisk, right? If you still don't, then you can use either https://www.asterisk.org/downloads or http://fonality.com/trixbox/downloadsto get the community versions of what they have. When it comes to GSM gateways (for that is what the "interface between the SIM card, computer and my small network" is called) I don't know of any cheap ones around. I use 2N OfficeRoute<http://www.2n.cz/en/products/umts-gateways/officeroute/>in my sites. Perhaps you could "look East" for cheaper options. I am only giving you an example. Asterisk speaks SIP, so your GSM Gateway must also speak the same language. On integration with your "digital PBX", you just need an IP Trunk between an IP GSM gateway and your PBX. Then you of course define dialing patterns and call routing between them. If you have a device like the one I've shown, then of course you'll want to do LCR for your calls so that you save on cross network charges. HI,
As a hobby project I would like to build a digital PABX using asterisk and a Safaricom line. I have a spare computer that I would like to use for this purpose. Has anyone done this before?
I need pointers specifically on how to build the interface between the SIM card, computer and my small network at home. What hardware did you use to hold the SIM card and does it have a standard ethernet port to connect it to my 'digital PABX'?
My end objective is to have the set up this way:
Incoming calls -> Asterisk box -> Calls routed to softphones installed on the computers -> Me receiving calls and saying "M.G customer care. How may I help you" -> Impress family , friends and the Mrs(Designate) and eventually earn the grand title of 'Immortal Family Geek'(IFG) -> Live to be 140 and then die happy having lived a fulfilling life! :)
I would be keen on spending as little money as possible seeing as this is just a fun project for me to explore the world of Asterisk/Open-Source Digital PABXs.

Moses M.G.
