I'm sorry to inform you that reverse engineering happens all the time, and on all fronts. Not just open source. Medical, engineering, IT, agriculture. Many of te things we know now such as chemistry and biology were precisely due to reverse engineering. Taking things apart to see how thy work is fair game.
