These sim cards work like Gevey/X/R sim cards for temporarily unlocking iPhones. It will work like an interposer, thus one of the reasons why both operators cannot be active at the same time. Sort of like a man-in-the-middle-attack. I believe the Equity sim will work this way: 1. Get a Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity (TMSI). This will identify each handset before IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) is sent out and processed i.e. authenticate IMEI. 2. The network will then issue a TMSI for the connection. 3. The SIM card then issues an acceptable MCC/MNC combination. (MCC - Mobile Country Code; MNC - Mobile Network Code) 4. The connection is made and kaboom...the connection is made What I'm wondering is if Equity will have its own network code or they will be using Airtel's MNC. I don't think Equity has anything to loose, its not like its their core business and since safaricom is constantly trying to get a footing into the banking industry we need a company that will bring some real competition to safaricom.
On a technical side of things how does the thin SIM really work? Does it allow the host SIM to interact directly to the phone or it acts like a proxy or a man in the middle? If its the latter then I do see Safaricom's security concerns.

The tech is definitely interesting but everyone who has underestimated Safari-com has lived to regret it. I do not see why Safaicom will also not start issuing NFC enabled SIM cards.
In my opinion going head to head with Safaricom will be disastrous. Lots of money will be wasted. Go for the guys neglected by Safaricom. Online, small transfers, etc. I would focus on mobile money and nothing else. Neglect voice, data etc.

@Nick, I'm 201% sure. It's there in the fine print of almost every provider I've had the chance to meet. What's yours are just the personal details, and lately the number (MSISDN). Ever wondered why you are issued with a new SIM card when you port out of a particular provider?
Tony.
