From what I gather a major culprit of performance degradation for iOS 4 on a 3G is spotlight. Should you wish to try again make sure you configure spotlight to only search contacts and applications.

Software are in 2,3 and 4 series so Iphone 4 cannot be run on Iphone 3Gs since they are both names of the physical phone. Maybe you meant iOS 3 running on Iphone 4
