Techies are known to be *arrogant*, for lack of a better word. I think the applicant is trying to appear simple, that it is the tech-brain that matters, not the application-writing-brain. We recently decided to bring on some interns and were shocked with how unprofessional their applications were. As a matter of fact, we will be teaching it as a short course so after their internships they will have better chances to get hired.
To those young people who are looking for employment, cover letter writing isnt difficult. It is your first impression on how you sell yourself. There are many resources available on the web for reference.
