I agree with Thuo, Safaricom is not in the business of loaning money, but they can reduce their 'risk' to nil (or close to nil) if they keep the loaned calls strictly within their network. Why? well, because it is like taking money from one account at safaricom to another account at safaricom. In case 1 million people default, safaricom will simply have a hole on paper but not in real life. However, if the borrowers called Zain lines and then defaulted, the hole in safaricom's books would be real because they would actually receive an invoice from Zain,.. they would pay for this with real money..thus be exposed. Safcom charges a whole 5 bob when u 'request' for that 50 bob emergency credit. Well, at that point safcom is doing me a favour so i think they have the right (but a whole 10%?!).
