Purely on a rank basis Exchange outranks Mdaemon in almost every aspect. But the important thing of course is to look at requirements then go by which one best suits you. Exchange for instance must have active directory (and DNS) installed and running, which means you require a server, licenses for Windows server, Exchange and Office (Outlook) not to mention the expertise to manage this setup for the on-premise version, the cloud based Office 365 in my opinion is the best way to go with today's reliable connection. Expense for this is mostly licensing and Internet. If you are a small organization whose only needs are email communication and with a limited budget, maybe mdaemon would suffice.
