I have been playing for years with POVRAY. It's an open source
rendering application and it has a large community and there are tons
of free plugins/codes.

POVRAY is just a rendering tool (with advanced option like photons
shoot and interior media settings) so I also use Blender (or any mesh
program like Wings3D) to create my shapes, animation plugin to create
advanced animation, HDR application to create HDR images (with real
lighting environment) and UV mapping & texture map to create real
texture.

I had a lot of fun playing with POVRAY and I was starting to get good
results. Sadly, I dropped rendering with web coding :(

Never tried MAYA becoz of his cost :) and too lazy to start anoter
