I have seen people spending thousands of dollars on video conferencing from Cisco Telepresence to Polycom blackboxes.

What functionality do these solutions have that can not be done via skype? Mind you should you go for any of the proprietary solutions, the people you are conferencing must have an identical solution or you'll spend as much trying to do multi-codec integration. 

That's my take on this ...
