@Solomon, I agree, it's prudent to start with the TOT because it will suffice. VAT is a bigger responsibility that can wait without one risking non-compliance. @Eric, VAT certificates being phased out; does it mean the paper? so that, the tax obligation(s) relating to someone hasn't changed (if it's VAT or TOT it remains so), only the procedures involved in administration. that's the way i understand it. There is a workshop that takes place in KRA by Tax Payer Education. It's easy to find out about all this and it's very helpful to attend. I did exactly that sometimes ago. Actually, I went to KRA and they told me to send and email to controlroom@kra.go.ke, (yet I was there and they could have done it as I waited).
It's about two months and no response as yet.
I got my company's PIN manually( before they introduced the ITMS) so I only needed the tax obligation to be included in the existing PIN.
I'm waiting for someone from KRA to help me out.

@ Solomon VAT certificates are being phased out. Your online PIN certificate contains all the tax obligations that relate to you. Therefore if your registering as a new taxpayer using the online system you should select the VAT obligation, however if you are an existing taxpayer your obligations will appear automatically. If you notice that the tax obligation is not appearing on the certificate, contact the nearest KRA office or send an email to controlroom@kra.go.ke with your PIN, REGISTERED NAME and a small mesaage requesting for the obligation to be added to your certificate.
