If you are the tech type, looking for a technology box to tinker with and have fun with : PS3 is king.
Reasons:
- In built blue-ray disk player
- Capability for input Video up-scaling
- With the aid of a few cups of coffee + google skills, you can adapt the box into a functional entity in a networked set-up.
- The field is awash with plenty of independent developers hell-bent on completely opening up the box in terms of what may be installed.

I have a "Chipped" PS3 (Custom Firmware Version 3.55; Kmeaw flavour) capable of running games from their backups that has served me since 2010. Sony has clamped down on the "Chipping" through firmware upgrades. You most likely will get some box running the later hard-to-jailbreak firmware versions if you were to buy it brand new. I'm not an avid gamer.
