Problem with "us" techies is we expect to be babysitted. We all want a guy who will give you cash to sustain ur idea right from inception to execution. If you are serious about Venture capital then the model you should consider the Ycombinator model. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y_Combinator. Implement ur idea then approach a VC. You never approach them if you jst have ideas in your head.

There are many legal ways to protect your intelectual property. Also I believe that projects would be looked at individually and if they compete with the rest of the portfolio then bahati mbaya,be the first.
VCs are not that evil, while you may have trust issues,they are also trusting you with THEIR money so you just need to be sure that your values and theirs align.
