I have no clue as to how the backend systems work, but from a technical perspective, how comes the process is not reversible?
If I can buy airtime from mpesa, then it means the mpesa system can issue instructions to the billing system, so why cant the billing systems do the same to the mpesa system?

They want you to spend in terms of buying airtime, sending money or withdrawing (because they charge you for that). The only way you can recover your money is to sambaza to friends or talk to a friend who has a shop (if you have any) to sell it for you if you are willing to loose some amount that beats the normal airtime profit.
